Exploring Lough Allen: A Jewel in the Shannon River System

Lough Allen, the inaugural large lake on the River Shannon’s course, presents a vast and untamed expanse of water, stretching 10 km in length and 4 km across, nestled between the Slieve Anierin Mountains to the east and the Arigna Mountains to the west. Its water levels, controlled by sluice gates at Ballintra, can vary by as much as 1.5 meters.

The Allen Centre, located at its southern tip, marks a prime spot within this mixed fishery, renowned not only for its abundant pike but also for housing a variety of other fish species. Notably, Lough Allen is home to a substantial trout population, with individuals averaging around 0.75 kg, although the largest recorded trout caught weighed a remarkable 7.2 kg in 2012. Despite the presence of a small mayfly hatch, the peak months for trout fishing—April, August, and September—draw anglers, particularly to the area stretching from Gubcormongan to the Stoney river’s mouth on the east shore.

This region, affectionately dubbed the ‘Murder Mile’ by pike fishermen, is famed for its trout abundance. Additionally, the River Shannon, Ireland’s longest river, originates in the West Cavan mountains and flows 260 km southward to Limerick, linking the major lakes of Allen, Ree, and Derg across its gentle, meandering path through a catchment area that spans roughly 15,500 square kilometers.
